AxCrypt is the leading open source file encryption software for Windows. It integrates seamlessly with Windows to compress, encrypt, decrypt, store, send and work with individual files.
AxCrypt can be used from the command line, from other programs and interactively as a part of Windows Explorer.
In Windows Explorer, if you right-click on a document, on the context menu you will see the AxCrypt section where you will find most of the functionality of AxCrypt.
You can easily encrypt a file by right-click it and select 'Encrypt'. You'll be prompted to provide a pass phrase and optionally a key-file. The pass phrase is the secret that will protect your data from viewing by others and undetected tampering. You must enter your pass phrase a second time for verification, click OK and the file is now encrypted.
The encrypted document will have the .axx extension, and be shown with the AxCrypt icon. To conveniently decrypt the file, just double-click it to open it in its own application, and when done have it re-encrypted if modified.
To permanently decrypt a document, right-click it, select 'Decrypt' and enter the pass phrase when prompted. The file will be restored to its original name and contents.
AxCrypt has the capability to remember any number of pass phrases for decryption, and a default pass phrase for new encryption. This memory is only as long as your logon session. This could be tricky, because if you are logged on and you are away from the keyboard, someone could easily sit at your computer and access your encrypted files. To enable this feature, use the provided checkbox options on the pass phrase dialog.
All options in AxCrypt are 'sticky' – this means that the default is the same as your last choice.
With AxCrypt you can choose to permanently delete files and documents. This is more efficiently than using the 'send to recycle bin' method, because there are lots of third party applications that can recover your deleted documents. But if you use the 'Shred' option these files will never be recovered. All you have to do is to select the files you want to shred, and select the 'Shred' option on the right-click menu.
The maximum size of the file being encrypted must be around 500 – 700 Mega byte on Windows 98 and ME. On the NTFS drives the only limit is the disk space.
