DarkPhear is a free game console-style full classic RPG (role-playing game), originally created for DOS in 2001. Unfortunately the DOS platform died, but DarkPhear survived and you can now play it on modern computers. It can be played not only on Windows, but even on Linux.
How is that possible? Thanks to FreeBASIC, the game has been ported on modern platforms. FreeBASIC is a completely free, open-source, 32-bit BASIC compiler, with syntax similar to MS-QuickBASIC, that adds new features such as pointers, unsigned data types, inline assembly, object orientation, and many others.
With this transformation to the modern platforms, the game has brought many improvements, but - which is the most important the gameplay is pretty much intact. Now, DarkPhear includes support for mouse, joystick, language selection (Portuguese / English), sprite/pixel-based graphics, turn based battles, digital sound effects, excellent music and many hours of fun. There are even four levels of game speed. You can now play faster, get through mazes faster, level up faster and so on.
You start the game inside a castle, where you have a vision with the girl you love, named Alicia. Your first mission on this game will be to get a rare fruit that grows in a nearby cave. Your master needs this fruit for creating an antidote for your king, King Theos. Once you exit the castle gates, you will encounter various monsters to fight with.
Once a monster has been defeated you are awarded with experience points. There are lots of mission to complete, lots of quest to solve and in other words, you can spend lots of time playing DarkPhear if you are a classic RPG nostalgic.
Why is DarkPhear famous?
DarkPhear is famous because it revives the classic DOS RPG game back on modern computers. It comes with many improvements, like mouse support, and it offers lots of fun and many hours of gameplay.
