FamousWhy Editor: DiffEngineX is a useful utility that reports the differences between two Microsoft Excel workbooks. You can choose whether to compare every worksheet from the two books or just the sheets you have selected. If you compare at the Whole Workbook level, worksheets with the same name are automatically compared with each other. If you want to compare two sheets with different names you must select Selected Sheets and make sure only one sheet is selected in each of the list boxes.
But what kind of data does DiffEngineX compare? DiffEngineX reports the differences between the formulas, constants, defined names, cell comments and Visual Basic code found in workbooks.
DiffEngineX does not modify the workbooks you have compared. Every comparison will generate a new Microsoft Excel workbook listing each cell difference. This new workbook will contain one worksheet for every pair of sheets compared. Its very last worksheet is a summary of the number of different cells found in each pair. Also, DiffEngineX will create two copies of your original workbooks and it will modify them with new colors as part of 'Color Difference at Cell Level', it will 'Align Rows', 'Allign Columns' and 'Highlight Character Level Differences'. Different colors are used to mark different actions like deletions, modifications and additions.
DiffEngineX can compare formulae directly or by their calculated values. You can choose between the following two options:
- The Actual Formulae e.g.: =3*4 and = 6*5
- Their Calculated Values e.g. 12 and 30
There are a series of options to choose from when you compare two workbooks containing numeric data:
- Test for an Exact Numeric Match. Numbers are tested for an exact numeric match.
- Compare Up To [x] Decimal Places. E.g. when comparing up to 3 decimals, the values 9.8150 and 9.8152 will be treated as equal
- Smallest Difference Is [x]
- Smallest Percentage Difference Is [x] %
When comparing cells you may want to activate 'Case Insensitive Comparisons'. Selecting this option, the cell content will be compared without regards to its capitalization. E.g. “Famous” = “famous”
Or you can also choose to 'Ignore Smart Character Differences'. This means that DiffEngineX will ignore the difference between <"> and <'> etc.
Compared to the previous versions DiffEngineX 2.14 comes with better handling of large numbers of differences, it compares the infinity as a string rather than a number and it can now compare Visual Basic code and macros.
Requirements:
- Microsoft Excel (all versions from 2000 to 2010)
-.NET Framework 2.0
