FamousWhy Editor: FoxyTag is a free, legal and collaborative system to signal speed cameras on mobile phones.
The idea consists in posting virtual tags close to speed cameras in order to create a database with these cameras to warn other drivers. If your phone doesn't have an integrated GPS, you must connect to a GPS device via Bluetooth; use the Test' menu, restart the application, and you are ready to go.
You will get an alarm when you are closer than 15 seconds to a critical point, and a red point locating the speed camera appears on their screen. You can contribute by pressing:
- the key "1" of your mobile phone when you spot a fixed speed camera;
- the key "2" when you see a mobile speed camera
- the key "0" when a camera have disappeared
You should also signal speed cameras that have already been tagged for confirming their presence. The more you participate, the more the information you get is reliable. FoxyTag is a "collaborative" system.
When you tag a camera you must also choose its direction (yours, opposite direction, both directions). So, when you are driving in the opposite direction, FoxyTag does not warn you about a camera.
In order to limit the amount of communications with the server, FoxyTag downloads only the tags you are susceptible to cross during the next five minutes. If you reconfigure your route, a new connection is made to the server.
FoxyTag is an open speed cameras database that can be accessed by any compatible client application. At this moment there are seven applications which are using FoxyTag database:
- FoxyTag RI is the reference implementation of FoxyTag;
- EyeRadars is the iPhone version of FoxyTag;
- TrackerTag is an improved version of FoxyTag RI with an optimized user interface and some interesting additional functionalities;
- Speed Cam Hunter is the Android Google Phone version of FoxyTag;
- aSpeedCam Scanner is an iPhone application with HUD functionalities;
- GoldRadars is a specific iPhone application
- aSmart HUD Air is an iPhone digital dashboard featured by HUD mode and a music player.
