FamousWhy Editor: GrandPerspective is a small utility application for Mac OS X that graphically shows the disk usage within a file system. It can help you to manage your disk, as you can easily spot which files and folders take up the most space. It uses a so called tree map for visualisation. Each file is shown as a rectangle with an area proportional to the file's size. Files in the same folder appear together, but their placement is otherwise arbitrary.
GrandPerspective is developed especially for Mac OS X. It has its own way of visualising directory trees. The layout algorithm that is used is simple and effective and the file rectangles are drawn to be as clear and unobtrusive as possible.
If you are using GrandPerspective it means that you are concerned about disk space, so this software occupies a minimal space on your disk drive. It also needs just a few memory to run.
GrandPerspective offers a configurable display of views:
- Choice of color mapping schemes;
- Choice of color palettes;
- Configurable mapping by file type;
- Optionally view package contents;
- Optionally view the entire volume.
From the Preference tab you can enable or disable the deletion of files, with or without confirmation. Over here you can adjust the 'Rescan action' - whether you want a full rescan or partially one, or if you want the 'Rescan' to open in a new window or in the same one. You should use the ‘Rescan’ to compare the results before and after clean-up.
After GrandPerspective scans a folder, you may choose to delete a file, to reveal it by opening the containing folder in Finder or to open/run it.
You can even filter files and folders:
- Construct filter tests based an item's name, path, size, file type, hard-link status, and package status
- Use these filters to:
- Mask files in the view
- Filter files from the view
- Exclude files and folders when scanning a disk
- Filters and filter tests are automatically stored in the user preferences
GrandPerspective is offering the option to save results of disk scanning operations and to save images of views.
Why is GrandPerspective famous?
GrandPerspective is famous because it is a high value disk usage visualization tool that employs tree maps, easy to use and with a great graphic user interface. It was especially created for Mac OS, being one of the few similar applications developed exclusively for such an operating system.
