HAProxy works very well on all kind of websites but it was particularly developed for heavily loaded websites. Due to its unique characteristics, HAProxy can be easily integrated into any existing architecture, with no risks, while still enables you to "expose" vulnerable web servers on the internet.
HAProxy history has begun in 1996 with Webroute, a simple HTTP proxy. In time, the concept evolved and in 2000 the first true HAProxy ancestor was released. After years and years of improvements, tests and hard work, now in 2010 (after 14 years since the first idea), HAProxy became one of the most powerful (if not even the most powerful) application of its type.
HAProxy was developed as a cross-platform application supporting various operating systems and platforms such as: Linux, Solaris, Free BSD and Open BSD.
As a very low resources consumer, HAProxy can route HTTP requests depending on statically assigned cookies, switch to backup servers in the event a main one fails, stop accepting connections without breaking existing ones, block requests matching a particular pattern, accept connections to special ports dedicated to service monitoring or add, modify and delete HTTP headers both ways.
When you run a HTTP server, security is extremely important but even the most expensive firewalls and antivirus applications may fail. HAProxy is a solution which has proven its "power" since its first release. For 8 years (since its first release in 2002), HAProxy had only one single security problem (a minor one) occurred during a program update.
All in one, HAProxy is an extremely powerful and useful solution for web loading and balancing for TCP and HTTP based applications. On top of that, unlike many other similar products, HAProxy is completely free so basically you won't lose anything by trying it.
