FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Alberto Martinez Perez: In the short run I expect to release a new version of Font Viewer with better support for Windows Vista/7, especially for 64 bit editions. Then I want to redesign a bit the interface and integrate the font list windows in the tabs of the main window. After that, I have planned add full Unicode support.
FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for AMP Font Viewer? What inspired you the most? Do you plan to develop new software, or are you more focused on optimizing the current ones?
Alberto Martinez Perez: I started to develop Font Viewer in the college, since I needed a font manager for my own use. When Internet become widely available I released it and become quite popular, so I continued working on it.
Regarding the last question, now I don't have any new big project in mind, since I'm trying to focus in updating the current software, specially the ones that have any issues with Windows Vista/7.
FW Editor: AMP Font Viewer is one of the best font managers from the market. What is the secret?
Alberto Martinez Perez: Probably its users would answer better this, but I think that its key feature its ease of use while having many options, at least compared with other free managers.
FW Editor: What kind of fonts are supported by AMP Font Viewer?
Alberto Martinez Perez: Currently it fully supports TrueType, OpenType and Type 1 fonts, and partially supports TrueType Collections. I'm thinking about adding support for the WOFF format.
FW Editor: Why would you recommend AMP Font Viewer?
Alberto Martinez Perez: Although some of their parts needs a bit of redesign, I think that it allows you navigate your fonts very easily. I wrote it because I hated wasting a lot time finding the right font for a logo or a cover.
FW Editor: Can you tell us more about the concept behind AMP Font Viewer? Why is this software so special?
Alberto Martinez Perez: AMP Font Viewer focus on two concepts:
- If you like having all your fonts installed at the same time, it allows creating and combining categories for organizing them, so you can find the font you need in very little time.
- If you prefer having only a basic set of fonts installed, it allows browsing your font files from disk and install them as needed.
FW Editor: Can you tell us more about
Alberto Martinez Perez: The idea of temporarily installed fonts is having the option of installing the set of fonts needed for a project and then uninstall it easily. If you store the fonts in the project folder you can install them with a few clicks and they will be automatically released when you close Font Viewer.
Although starting with Windows 2000/XP you can have thousands of fonts installed at the same time, it makes very cumbersome use the font selection tools of some applications, because usually they only have a combo box for selecting the font name.
FW Editor: Now, to end our small interview, is there any message you would like to send to AMP Font Viewer users?
Alberto Martinez Perez: Just thanks to all the people that these years have donated money to the project, and also the ones that have emailed me sending bug reports or just their congratulations.
