An interview with Jose Pascoa

FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Jose Pascoa: For the last six years AWRC has been our major product with a strong user base both in the corporate and home markets. AWRC will continue to be improved with a major release every one or two years.

FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for AWRC? What inspired you the most? Do you plan to develop new software, or are you more focused on optimizing the current ones?
Jose Pascoa: In early 2001 we have seen a command line utility called PsExec which allows remote execution of software. More than anything else that was the trigger to produce a GUI equivalent and AWRC 1.0 was first release in June 2001. Since then we have added feature over feature to AWRC and it became our flagship product. We are about to launch another product by end of Octoberearly November 2010, which we believe will become another sure winner. Since we need a time lead over the competition, I can not reveal any details at the time of this writting but am sure you will hear about that new software soon.

FW Editor: AWRC has quite a strong competition but, so far, it succeeded in making a name for itself. What do you think about the AWRC success?
Jose Pascoa: Success can only exist when we offer something unique that corresponds to a real need. When the unique offering is not easy to duplicate by competition we are guaranteed to succeed if we continue to improve it all the time to increase the distance between what we are offering and any possible new entrants.

FW Editor: How does AWRC compare with other remote access software?
Jose Pascoa: AWRC is a special kind of remote access software. It can connect to a machine without a need to have previously install any software on it. In many environments that is really important.

FW Editor: What is your favorite AWRC feature?
Jose Pascoa: I use AWRC all the time, it is not a product we produced for others only. Not everyone has conscience of the power behind AWRC features. For example, when you use the File System tab and browse through the folders you are doing that under the System account, more powerful than an Administrator account. You can enter inside every folder no matter how the permissions were set for it. But every feature has its own place and time to be used, all are my sons, and I don't really want to conside any of them a favorte.

FW Editor: Which ports are used by AWRC when it connects to another computer?
Jose Pascoa: AWRC only uses port 445 and uses it indirectly because that port is opened by Microsoft Network Services itself. This is the reason why AWRC connections can pass through internet firewall, unless they block Microsoft Networks as well.

FW Editor: How safe is using AWRC on the Internet?
Jose Pascoa: It is totally safe because authentication is done by Windows itself and is not vulnerable to men in the middle attacks. Encryption can be used as well which will render and data collected and transfered virtually impossible to understand. On top of that, if every detail of the Microsoft Networks connection itself are to be kept hidden, you can use AWRC through a VPN.

FW Editor: Now, to end our small interview, is there any message you would like to send to AWRC users?
Jose Pascoa: We have a very loyal user base. Many corporations keep purchasing more licenses. We have corporations with hundreds of licenses, which is amazing because AWRC licenses are per seat, not per remote computer accessed. We appeciate this proof of confidence. Everybody knows that AWRC is safe, never a vulnerability that could cause a privilege escalation has been reported. We will keep improving the software according to our users suggestions and will keep delivering for many more years.
