An interview with Jeff Hoogland

FW Editor: Hey, what can you tell us about yourself? How old are you and when did you start being a programmer?
Jeff Hoogland: I'm a mathematics teacher in Chicago. I started programming as a hobby when I was fourteen and I started the Bodhi project just before I turned twenty.

FW Editor: Why did you choose to develop another Linux distro when there are so many out there already?
Jeff Hoogland: Bodhi sets itself apart from other Linux distros due to it's use of the Enlightenment desktop. Examining all the Linux distros, you will find fewer than a dozen that use Enlightenment.

FW Editor: How is Bodhi different from all the other Linux distros on the market? What makes it special?
Jeff Hoogland: Why use Bodhi over other "light weight" distros such as LXDE or XFCE? Enlightenment-- It is superbly designed, gorgeous and extremely fast on a wide variety of hardware. Screen shots do not do it justice.

FW Editor: What can you tell us about the Enlightenment desktop? Because this is the main feature of Bodhi, right?
Jeff Hoogland: The Enlightenment desktop has been built from the ground up to be fast. Is quick on even older hardware and on modern hardware it flies! It has also been designed to be elegant. To quote the Enlightenment website: "Enlightenment is not just a window manager for Linux/X11 and others, but also a whole suite of libraries to help you create beautiful user interfaces with much less work than doing it the old fashioned way and fighting with traditional toolkits, not to mention a traditional window manager."

FW Editor: Why did you choose to build Bodhi with an Ubuntu base and not a Debian one? Is it better?
Jeff Hoogland: Ubuntu in general provides a solid base and has lots of resources available to it. For these reasons (among others) the Bodhi team feels Ubuntu is the best base for the time being.

FW Editor: Can you tell us more about your work? Any plans for the future for making even better programs?
Jeff Hoogland: I write a fairly popular technology blog - http://jeffhoogland.blogspot.com/ - in my spare time and in general I love playing with all thing technological. I do not currently have any plans for other projects, but who knows where the future will take me!
