FW Editor: Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper is different from any other wallpapers I have ever seen. What inspired you in developing such a unique wallpaper concept?
Carles Sentis: First of all I always wanted to learn gtk but never found the time or the project to work on, until one day I found this script that did a similar thing as my application is doing, and I also notice that die.net had different world maps to choose from. So, I thought that it would be nice to have a graphical user interface (GUI) where you would have all the options in one application. This is how RSW was born.
FW Editor: What is new in this Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper version (0.3.1)
Carles Sentis: RSW is still a work in progress. In fact I just release version 0.3.2 where I just fixed a small bug.
The latest major changes was adding the style and color change of the wallpaper from within RSW.
I'm also working on having a custom map center where people from Australia would be able to center their country to the middle of the map.
FW Editor: Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper is taking its information from a satellites network. How accurate are these data?
Carles Sentis: All images are taken from die.net.
They start with cloudless images of the earth during the day (from a pair of NASA satellites) and night (from a DoD program to map city lights). Every 3 hours, I download a composite cloud image based on data from weather satellites all over the world. And every half hour, these images are composited and mapped onto a sphere by xplanet according to the relative position of the sun. The flat maps are post-processed by ImageMagick to cut off the 15 degrees nearest the north and south poles where cloud data is unavailable.
FW Editor: It is possible to observe big clouds formations using Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper? It is possible to follow their movement?
Carles Sentis: All the could are at almost shown real time with earth. And you can follow their movements.
FW Editor: Are there any special system requirements in order to use Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper? Does Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper require a constant internet connection?
Carles Sentis: RSW is design to run with Ubuntu but it also works with others distros. All the information can be found here @ realtimesunlightwallpaper.weebly.com
FW Editor: Can you tell us a few things about your future projects? What are your plans for the future?
Carles Sentis: I already explain some of my future plans for the future on a question above, but also thinking on exporting RSW to the Android platform.
FW Editor: Thank you for your time and for this interview. We are looking forward to hear more from Carles Sentis and to see many more interesting projects like Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper.
Carles Sentis: Thank you for appreciating my work with RSW. I'm glad is having such a positive feedback from it.
King regard, Carles Sentis
