FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Cleber M. Casali: I'm currently developing a 3D engine using OpenGL and SDL, wich I will use for my next game.
FW Editor: Can you tell us more about CMCGames? What is the history of this company? How everything begun?
Cleber M. Casali: I always loved video games since I was very youg. When I was 10, my father gave me a MSX, wich is home computer with BASIC programming language. I have become fascinated by the idea of programming games. Quickly I have learned the BASIC language and started writing my own very simple games for MSX. That's how it started. Years later came the PC, DarkPhear, Retro River Raid, the fangame Double Dragon Forever wich sadly have been cut off by Brizo Interactive. And years later, I'm still developing games.
FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for DarkPhear? Why have you revived a DOS game?
Cleber M. Casali: I have started writing DarkPhear in the mid 90's, when I was about 16-17 years old.
All I had was a 386 pc with DOS, Autodesk Animator and QBasic 7.1, and I though "that must be enough to create a RPG". I was right.
I have revived it because nobody uses DOS this days. At first, I just wanted a simple port to allow people to run it easily on modern operating systems. I have even considered using DOSBox.
But FreeBASIC, wich is a very powerful compiler, made it possible to make a proper port without much effort. I tried to keep the gameplay intact, but it soon became a "plus" version, with all the new features like the improved music, joystick support and the pixel scalers.
FW Editor: Which are the targeted players for DarkPhear?
Cleber M. Casali: Basically it's targeted at all the fans of the classic RPGs, like Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Shinning Force...
FW Editor: How can you describe DarkPhear in just a few words?
Cleber M. Casali: A free, 2D, game console-style, classic RPG.
FW Editor: Can you tell us more about the concept behind DarkPhear?
Cleber M. Casali: I wanted to create a classic RPG, but instead of the traditional medieval theme, I wanted to create a much darker, futuristic and chaotic universe.
The first name of the game was "Zetta : The Lost World", and then after the first version, my coding have improved a lot, I re-wrote it from scratch and it became DarkPhear.
My friend Bruno Nogueira started helping me with it. I met Jeremy Eller in the internet, he really liked the game and offered to write the music. And the rest is history.
FW Editor: Are you going to keep improving DarkPhear?
Cleber M. Casali: From now on, probably just bug fixes.
FW Editor: Now, to end our small interview, is there any message you would like to send to DarkPhear users?
Cleber M. Casali: I'm planning a sequel. ;)
