FW Editor: CDBurnerXP is, without any doubt, a well designed CD/DVD burner with plenty of features and options. What can you tell us about this software?
Florian Schmitz: There is quite some information available on the web in regard to what it does, so more interesting might be a bit of its history.
The very first version 1.0.0 has been released on 2003-02-18, at this time by the former developers Stefan and Fredrik Haglund. Starting at that point of time, CDBurnerXP has been constantly rewritten, version 2.x, 3.0 and 3.5 were all developed from scratch. Because of this, sometimes even years passed before a new version had been released, to our users' regret. Despite that fact, CDBurnerXP has been able to maintain or even exptend its popularity. I started taking over the development in 2007 and formed a company in 2008, currently I am evaluating which how CDBurnerXP can evolve in the future.
FW Editor: Beside CDs, CDBurnerXP also allows you to burn DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. It is possible to burn files larger than 10 MB?
Florian Schmitz: Yes, that's possible, but I believe that's not quite the ability that makes CDBurnerXP stand out as I don't know any burning software that has such a limit.
FW Editor: It is possible to convert audio files before burning process? For instance, Nero can convert audio files if the user chooses to burn an audio disk (tracks).
Florian Schmitz: Before burning an audio disc, CDBurnerXP will need to convert most audio files (in background) to a format that can be used for burning audio discs. There is no audio conversion feature though, there are plenty of applications out there which are dedicated to this task and would do better than CDBurnerXP anyway.
FW Editor: CDBurnerXP was released as a freeware. However, there are certain websites that are selling your product. Why is that?
Florian Schmitz: That's a really good question. Oviously some people are trying to earn easy money by selling free software, not only CDBurnerXP, though I sometimes get the impression that for some unknown reason CDBurnerXP is the scammer's favourite (I hope that they believe CDBurneXP is the best free burning application). The licence even includes a statement that explicitly prohibits selling the software. If it were promising, I would sue all those scammers.
FW Editor: Do you have any customer support service for CDBurnerXP users? How can someone receive help if he encounters a problem in using CDBurnerXP?
Florian Schmitz: There is a forum at http://forum.cdburnerxp.se, but I do not offer any paid or personal support. If you are nice to me, and I have enough free time, I will try my best to help you, otherwise you need to try getting support from other users of CDBurnerXP.
FW Editor: CDBurnerXP evolved and improved since its first version. Which are the most important improvements? Do you plan to further improve CDBurnerXP or do you have plans to release a new product?
Florian Schmitz: I'm not sure which changes were most important. I like the fact that CDBurnerXP supports a whole lot of audio file formats by now, as well as various audio playlists. Disk spanning (quite recently added) also seems to be popular.
I have many plans, too many to implement all of them with the given amount of free time I currently have. I got ideas for new products and also for new features. I know at least two kinds of applications that would be highly useful on Windows and still have not been developed, or at least not with the kind of quality I would like.
A small spin-off I developed a while ago is Ketarin (http://ketarin.org/) which makes the life of system administrators a bit easier and may serve as basis for a future product.
Since I am not actually using CDBurnerXP myself that much (yep, I don't burn a whole lot of discs), it will not be my only point of interest in the future :)
FW Editor: Would you like to send a message to all CDBurnerXP users?
Florian Schmitz: Thanks for your ongoing support, without the popularity of CDBurnerXP I would not be able to make as many plans for the future.
