An interview with Paul Crowley

FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Paul Crowley: Expanding our offerings in the area of forensic software.

FW Editor: What inspired you the most in creating CD/DVD Diagnostic?
Paul Crowley: In 1996 CD recording was just breaking into the consumer market and a lot of people created discs without understanding what they were doing. A lot of discs got written that people had no way of reading. And this was before the advent of DirectCD which created a lot more discs that people couldn't read.

FW Editor: What makes CD/DVD Diagnostic so powerful and unique? Why it is so appreciated?
Paul Crowley: CD/DVD Diagnostic was the first recovery tool for data on CDs and DVDs that existed. It is designed to get the data back, no matter what the problem might be. This is done by re-implementing the file systems completely with an eye towards making data recoverable. It is valuable to consumers because it does all of this in the background, hidden away from the user. This means that without knowing how to recover data the data is just recovered.

FW Editor: What is the difference between the Evaluation Version and the Full Version of CD/DVD Diagnostic?
Paul Crowley: The evaluation version does not copy data. Unfortunately, this is the kind of product that people with problems getting at their data are sure they need only once. So, if the evaluation version was just time-limited there would be no need to every buy the full version.

FW Editor: Can someone use CD/DVD Diagnostic without being an expert?
Paul Crowley: Absolutely. The entire design of the product is to work behind the scenes and do whatever is required to recover the most data possible without any special knowledge by the user.

FW Editor: Can CD/DVD Diagnostic recover data from 'quick-erased' disks?
Paul Crowley: Yes, but some special techniques and a modified drive is required. The modifications expose the laser and could easily subject people to the raw laser energy and blind them. Because of this we do not tell consumers how to modify drives to do this but can do the recovery in our office.

FW Editor: Is there anything you would like to change in CD/DVD Diagnostic? Why?
Paul Crowley: At some point we are going to break away from the "Windows Explorer" model of the screen display. It is a little dated and doesn't really convey to the user the difference between what Windows can do and what CD/DVD Diagnostic can do.

FW Editor: Is there any message you would like to send to CD/DVD Diagnostic users?
Paul Crowley: If there is something you would like to see in the product, please let us know at support@infinadyne.com
