An interview with Kris Jonasson

FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Kris Jonasson: Continuous Development. I'm a fanatic when it comes to making things for the web. I've been working on three projects which take up most of my time. Two are Member based projects (both free), that will be focused on the WordPress Community and the many, many Theme and Plugin Developers that float around the net. I don't want to give away too much before the launch of both projects, but they will be coming to light by the end of 2010, and start of 2011. The third is a URL shortening service with a twist. By placing a Cmin.us widget on your website, you can automatically shorten your page URL and provide a list of Social Bookmarking/Media sites that users can submit to complete with a shortened URL, and the Page Title. All for Free. It is currently live and operating (www.cmin.us).

FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for My Brand Login? What inspired you the most? Do you plan to develop new software, or are you more focused on optimizing the current ones?
Kris Jonasson: My Brand Login was actually the very first WordPress Plugin I released to the general public for download. I started creating MBL in the middle of 2009 to ease the time it took for me to customize the Registration/Login page of my Clients WordPress Powered Websites. At the time of MBL's conception, I had been modifying the core files of WordPress to style and customize clients Login/Registration pages. This would work well, but when a client would upgrade the version of WordPress, all changes to the core would be lost. Not fun for my clients or my ears. This was the biggest factor in creating My Brand Login. Development of software seems to be flowing through me, and I see no stop in production anytime soon. I actually have two new plugins under the 'My Brand Plugin' name due to launch at the end of this summer. One is focused on the Administration/User Interface of WordPress, and the second will be a surprise (but a good one I promise). Both will be released and available on the WordPress.org Website. However, I still will be optimizing and improving My Brand Login and all of my other plugins for a long time to come (www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins/profile/krisjay).

FW Editor: What is your favorite feature from My Brand Login? Why?
Kris Jonasson: Definitely the My Brand Login User Interface. I really enjoyed putting it together by adding a very unique style to the page. Most plugins out there have a very basic options page to control the plugin itself. I wanted to go a little different route by providing a user-friendly, yet visually appealing interface for control of the plugin. This was not how I intended on going with the interface in the first place, but it eventually ended up the way you see it today.

FW Editor: Is there anything you would like to change/remove in a future My Brand Login version? Why?
Kris Jonasson: Yes there is. A Couple New Options that will add more customization to the Login/Registration Page. The new version is currently under development (version 1.7), and will be released mid September, 2010 (fingers crossed). This version will allow different types of jQuery effects to be used, adding a more customized feel to the authors creation. I think this will create a better way to personalize page set-up without hacking into the My Brand Login core files, while utilizing the power jQuery brings to the table.

FW Editor: My Brand Login has quite a strong competition but, so far, it succeeded in making a name for itself. What is the secret?
Kris Jonasson: I'm not exactly sure. Maybe I released the plugin at the right time, but the name definitely makes it stand out from the crowd. Everyone wants to have their own distinct identity on the net, so by using the term 'My Brand' I think I got a jump on some of the competition. The other customizing plugins out there each have their own unique functions, but My Brand Login adds some very different effects that the others don't seem to have. This in turn with the very user-friendly interface and much appreciated talk about the plugin from great Web Development Sites like: 1st Web Designer (www.1stwebdesigner.com), and Freelance Folder (www.freelancefolder.com), My Brand Login has become a great success.

FW Editor: Why My Brand Login is totally free when so many other similar scripts are asking payments?
Kris Jonasson: I never wanted anything for my time creating this. My Brand Login was developed, because I love to develop. I guess you can consider me a code junkie. People have asked if they can donate for my time and work on My Brand Login, but I really don't want anything. Really. I say donate to a local charity for children or animal rescue. They need the funds more than I do. I provided this to the WordPress Community out of Love for the WordPress Platform, in hope it would be of use. I'm just happy to see it succeed the way it has.

FW Editor: Besides My Brand Login, is there any similar script that had a positive impact on you? Why?
Kris Jonasson: I would have to say my 'Transitions' plugin for WordPress. I had a great time creating the script. I first made it for my Web/Software Development company website, Graphic Dreams Studio (www.gdsweb.ca), when we first launched back at the beginning of 2009. When we made a change to the site design at the beginning of 2010, I decided to release it to the public for download. It creates a fade 'transition' effect between pages as you navigate the website it's installed on. I'm currently still developing it, and have some new features coming into play very soon (www.krisjaydesigns.com/?p=946).

FW Editor: How would you describe My Brand Login in just a few words?
Kris Jonasson: The Best Way To Create Your Brand with WordPress.

FW Editor: What are the advantages of using My Brand Login over any other similar script?
Kris Jonasson: Well first off it's free. That's a big bonus right off the start. I think it's all up to the user if they like My Brand Login, and can use it to fit their needs. It utilizes the jQuery Library, unique to MBL, adding some great effects that can't be found in any other Login Customizing WordPress Plugin on the market. It's just a great plugin. Quality support is also a working factor. For the most part, everyone who uses My Brand Login has been very satisfied, so it's a win-win situation.

FW Editor: Would you like to send a message to My Brand Login users?
Kris Jonasson: I would just like to thank everyone who has talked about, used and abused My Brand Login. Expect great new features, and some top-notch new software from me in the future! Thanks a mill for this award!!
