An interview with Lateef Alabi-Oki

FW Editor: Scribes is a great text editor for GNOME. What inspired you in developing such a software?
Lateef Alabi-Oki: The other great text editors for Unix were very powerful but equally very difficult and sometimes frustrating to use. I wanted to create an editor that focused on providing a simple, enjoyable and empowering experience for all types of users.

FW Editor: Which unique features (functionalities) are available in Scribes only?
Lateef Alabi-Oki: I don't think in terms of features and functionalities but more in terms of experiences. All text editors do the same thing. They allow users to edit and manipulate text. In this regard, Scribes is no different than any other text editor. What makes Scribes different is how it selects and combines form and features to create a subtle and unique text editing experience. You can't pick and choose differentiating features. That depreciates the overall experience of Scribes. All the features available in Scribes work together to create an experience. That experience is what makes Scribes unique. What makes a Bugatti different from a Toyota Prius? The experience!

FW Editor: It is possible to customize Scribes based on each user needs?
Lateef Alabi-Oki: Scribes aims to eliminate the need for users to baby-sit, configure, fiddle, or tweak it. That's precious time that could be spent creating content, or solving real problems. So Scribes does all it can to ensure that all its features require no configuration on the part of the user. It tries to automate common processes, like saving files, and for others it tries to provide intelligent context-aware user interfaces. Only as a final resort does it provide customization options. The options are provided primarily to aid usability, accessibility and debugging. Programatically, it is easy to extend Scribes via it's plugin system.

FW Editor: One of the most important features available in Scribes is the syntax highlighting for more than 30 languages. Isn't that equivalent with a multi-language support?
Lateef Alabi-Oki: Yes, it is. I'm also working on providing language specific features for some of the supported languages.

FW Editor: How do you plan to improve Scribes? Are you currently working on a new Scribes version? If yes, can you give us some
Lateef Alabi-Oki: I plan on improving Scribes by making it smarter. I'm currently working on releasing version 0.4 of Scribes. It's still in its development phase. I'm focusing on stability and polish. Version 0.4 will have a new slick user interface, new and improved text processing features, efficient ways to open files, enhanced Python support, significant performance improvements and of course a better overall user experience.

FW Editor: Do you have any message for those who are using Scribes? Is there anything you would like to say to them?
Lateef Alabi-Oki: Thanks to all those who support and contribute to Free Software.
