An interview with Brian G. Welch

FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Brian G. Welch: To move the business away from hands-on health and safety support and more towards QHSE business software solutions.

FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for TIRA? What inspired you the most? Do you plan to develop new software, or are you more focused on optimizing the current ones?
Brian G. Welch: Around 10 years ago. Initially, to make tasks more efficient to allow me extra time for coffee breaks.

FW Editor: TIRA is one of the best risk management and analysis programs from the market. What is the secret?
Brian G. Welch: I have been there and worn the T-shirt, I know the risk assessment process both from a hands-on perspective as well as from a management of multiple tasks, targets and objectives.

FW Editor: Do you plan to improve or change TIRA in any way? If yes, how are you going to do that?
Brian G. Welch: Additional risk assessments are planned for; Hazardous Substances, Fire, PPE and 1st Aid arrangements.

FW Editor: While most of the similar applications are quite expensive, TIRA is completely free. Why?
Brian G. Welch: Whilst there are many reasons the two most prominent would be 1) To help to make a different to employees health and safety by making their companies health and safety management system simpler and easier to understand, more efficient and in managing concerns real-time. 2) To build a reputation as a supplier of quality QHSE software programmes that "do what it says on the tin" so to speak.

FW Editor: Besides TIRA, is there any other similar software that had a positive impact over you? Why?
Brian G. Welch: Microsoft embedding VB into its office applications (few years back now)

FW Editor: Is there any customer support service for TIRA users?
Brian G. Welch: Please go to http://www.onsafelines.com/tira-home-page.html

FW Editor: What is your favorite TIRA feature and why?
Brian G. Welch: Modular approach to risk assessments and data pulled from central tables. On the fly data inputting

FW Editor: Can you tell us more about this feature? Why it is so important? Is TIRA the same without it?
Brian G. Welch: Learn how to input a Risk Assessment such as Manual Handling and the principles are the same for the other types of available Risk Assessments. Names, Grades and Team, etc. once entered in any risk assessment then become available throughout the whole application. On the fly entry allows users to add new names, grades departments, etc. without leaving the risk assessment you are presently working on.

FW Editor: Thank you for this interview. We are looking forward to see how TIRA will evolve.
Brian G. Welch: You're welcome...
