FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Pat Besong: I'm working on a Windows version of MovCaptioner.

FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for MovCaptioner? What inspired you the most? Do you plan to develop new software, or are you more focused on optimizing the current ones?
Pat Besong: I was 48 years old and new to writing applications. I had some knowledge of adding captions to movies, and decided I could make it easier to do for people. Right now I'm more focused on improving MovCaptioner and getting the Windows version out.

FW Editor: MovCaptioner is one of the best applications to create movie subtitles. What is the secret?
Pat Besong: I think the key is that I tried to make it simple to use. I have had many users tell me it's the easiest way they've tried to caption their movies.

FW Editor: Do you plan to improve or change MovCaptioner in any way? If yes, how are you going to do that?
Pat Besong: I may add a out-time for captions, but I'm not quite sure how to best implement it yet. I really want to keep it simple and easy to use.

FW Editor: MovCaptioner has quite a strong competition but, so far, it succeeded in making a name for itself. What do you think about the huge success of MovCaptioner?
Pat Besong: It's mostly due to word of mouth, as I've hardly done any advertising. I've seen lots of posts on blogs of people recommending it, so I think that has helped quite a bit.

FW Editor: What are the advantages of using MovCaptioner over any other similar product?
Pat Besong: Simplicity and price are the two main reasons people use it. Another would be the number of caption formats it can export as well as import to make the job easier. I also offer free upgrades, something most software developers don't do.

FW Editor: Besides MovCaptioner, is there any application that had a positive impact over you? Why?
Pat Besong: I really like MacSpeech Dictate. It's a speech-to-text program for the Mac that allows me to repeat what I hear in my headphones into a microphone and it types my captions for me right into the MovCaptioner interface. Saves a lot of typing!

FW Editor: Is there any customer support service for MovCaptioner users?
Pat Besong: I have been very good about responding to every question I've had and have gone pretty much out of my way to help people in many cases. I've done screen shares over iChat with people from as far away as Hawaii, the Netherlands, and Germany to make sure they were getting the help they needed. Luckily, I get very few support requests.

FW Editor: How can you describe MovCaptioner in one single word?
Pat Besong: Easy!

FW Editor: Now, to end our small interview, is there any message you would like to send to MovCaptioner users?
Pat Besong: Yes, I would like to thank my many customers for purchasing MovCaptioner first of all. I also thank them for their many ideas for improvements to the software and for their patience while I made their requests happen. I'm not a programmer by trade or training, so I may not be able to get it done overnight. I'm also one guy with a day job, so I do what I can.
