FW Editor: What are your plans or objectives in the near future?
Tran Nam Quang: A full rewrite of DocFetcher is planned, because there are a lot of useful features we'd like to add that are hard to implement in the current architecture. I cannot give a specific date for the rewrite though.
FW Editor: How and when did you start writing the code for DocFetcher? What inspired you the most? Do you plan to develop new software, or are you more focused on optimizing the current ones?
Tran Nam Quang: DocFetcher grew out of my dissatisfaction with the desktop search applications I knew back then in 2007, including Google Desktop Search and a couple of open source implementations. I found these programs either too bloated or too immature, so I decided to write something simpler and easier to use. Personally, I don't have any plans to publish new software besides DocFetcher, but I don't know about my fellow developers.
FW Editor: DocFetcher is one of the open source desktop search application from the market. What is the secret?
Tran Nam Quang: Our work is non-profit and we use our own software, so I think we are more focused on usability and efficiency than our commercial competitors.
FW Editor: Do you plan to improve DocFetcher? If yes, how?
Tran Nam Quang: As stated above, a full rewrite is planned.
FW Editor: DocFetcher is totally free and this is an amazing thing. Do you intend to bring a
Tran Nam Quang: Nope. We've already benefitted from the endless amount of incredible open source software out there, and DocFetcher is our way to say "thanks".
FW Editor: What are the advantages of using DocFetcher over any other similar product?
Tran Nam Quang: Simple to use, cross-platform (Windows and Linux), indexing is very fast
FW Editor: How can you describe DocFetcher in just a few words?
Tran Nam Quang: A program to search the contents of files on the computer.
FW Editor: What is your favorite DocFetcher feature and why? Can you tell us more about this feature?
Tran Nam Quang: The simplicity and usability of the user interface. There's no program menu (yet?), just a couple of buttons, and lots of functionality was put in the context menus, making the program look very clean and simple.
FW Editor: Now, to end our small interview, is there any message you would like to send to DocFetcher users?
Tran Nam Quang: If you like our software, tell more people about it. Thanks :)
